AI grading of handwritten Mongolian maths homework

Problem
Teachers mark stacks of photographed or scanned worksheets handwritten in Mongolian Cyrillic. An automatic grader has to read the handwriting correctly and agree with the teacher’s marks, not just produce an answer.
Solution
A vision model reads each student’s page. A rule-based checker then compares the answers with a key built once from the teacher’s own answer sheet.
It understands numbers, expressions, ordering and greater-or-less comparisons, and gives partial credit on multi-step problems. Only uncertain cases go to a teacher review queue.
We built the evaluation first: a reference set taken from teachers’ own marks, regression cases and an auto-improve loop. The grader can switch between AI providers.
Outcome
In a pilot on about 250 grade 6–7 submissions, it agreed with teachers on 95.4% of 195 grade-6 problems and 89.2% of 585 grade-7 problems. It costs about $0.003 per page, roughly 30 times less than the first version.
